Being 10 nowadays must be pretty mental. When I was 10 in 1995 all I ever had to worry about was the chain on my bike and how I would get my Mitre Ultimax out of next door’s backyard without her seeing me. Today though 10 year olds have to worry about iPads and Social Media and really hard exams every year at school plus probably loads more that I’m unaware of.
To add insult to injury they also don’t have Live and Kicking or SM:TV to help them cope on the weekends like we did in the lovely 90’s. I also find it pretty depressing that someone born 10 years ago – in 2007 – is an actual human who I could have an actual conversation with. Tenuous link here we come: someone celebrating being 10 years old this year is the legendary venue Trof in the NQ.
To celebrate Trof will be putting on a huge all-out FREE celebration, packed with top-notch, all day naughtiness from 25th May through ‘till Wednesday 31st.
Kicking off the celebrations will be a Prohibition era ‘speakeasy’ launch night with a live brass band on Thursday 25th May. Friday will then see a sexy funk & soul set from the You Dig? boys, and a late night take over from Wet Play that will aim to keep you going right into the late hours. House, disco, electro-boogie, techno, and afro-funky goodness are guaranteed to be on the cards.
Those legends at La Discotheque, are cruising on over for a mini-takeover of giant proportions on Saturday 27th May. Boasting huge acts including Candi Staton, Jocelyn Brown, Todd Terje, and Hercules & Love Affair, at Albert Hall, ‘La Petite Discotheque’ will have equal calibre with Will Tramp!, Disco Mums, El Diablo’s Social Club, Disco Illusions and Luv Dancin’. Gorilla’s ‘Disco Brunch’ have also confirmed their seat at the table. All in all, expect Disco ‘til the break of dawn, flamingos, feathers and a shit load of glitter.
Bank Holiday Sunday will see a wholesome vinyl set from popular Manchester face Pasta Paul with his ‘Roast & Records’ day which pretty much does exactly what it says on the tin. Have a bloody massive lovely roast dinner with lashings of gravy while Paul nurses away last night’s regrets with some chilled out tunes. As you head into the evening you will see Euphony DJs takeover until 3am – smashing the night and creating even more regrets for you when you get to work on Tuesday.
The Bank Holiday Monday sees The Deaf Institute’s flagship, new music festival ‘Stay Fresh Fest’ bring some of the hottest acts in the North onto one bill. It’s promised to be like a raucous DIY house party show in a super tiny room apparently with some VERY special guests yet to be unveiled.
As if all that wasn’t enough, they’ve also got a 10th Birthday themed quiz on Tuesday with top of the range prizes. They’ve got a big fat cash prize, a week’s VIP pass at The Albert Hall and plenty of free drinks to give away. Finally, Wednesday will see one of Manchester’s biggest names, legendary front man of Doves, Jimi Goodwin perform a one-off acoustic set at the top of the bill on what is usually Trof NQ’s ‘Open Mic’ night. Also on the ironic Open Mic roster, are favourites of the city; The Travelling Band.
