Celebrating its fifth year, the north’s leading art buying event, Buy Art Fair, will return to Spinningfields in Manchester from 27 to 30 September this year. Its sister event, The Manchester Contemporary, will run alongside Buy Art Fair making it one of the largest art fairs outside London.
Sponsors this year include Manchester’s Spinningfields and The Avenue as well as Hetherington Newman, bespoke furniture and architectural joinery specialists based in Knutsford, Cheshire. In addition, a wealth management company, a major law firm and the operator for the north’s most prestigious restaurant group, are also about to sign as sponsors.
“During the past five years, the fair has sold work by a range of artists including Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Rolf Harris and Vic Reeves.”
Buy Art Fair will host 50 galleries from across the UK exhibiting works from over 500 established and popular artists. The Manchester Contemporary, now in its fourth year, will continue to focus on a small number of selected UK and international galleries showing the work of exciting emerging contemporary artists.
Affordable, original
Buy Art Fair, working in partnership with Manchester City Council, the Arts Council, Own Art and the Contemporary Art Society, provides a relaxed setting for art enthusiasts to see and buy the latest affordable original art with prices ranging from £50 to £5,000. The event now attracts over 5,000 people each year from across the north of England, ranging from first time buyers to collectors and curators who, since the event started in 2008, have increased their art spend at the fair by 70 per cent.
Visitors to this year’s Buy Art Fair can expect to see works from galleries including Erpen, Art Republic, Cloud Galleries, Bleach Box, Tom Lewis and Webbs Fine Art, to name a few.
Speaking about Buy Art Fair, managing director Thom Hetherington, commented: “During the past five years, the fair has sold work by a range of artists including Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Rolf Harris and Vic Reeves.”
“We are passionate about art and making a way of purchasing original and affordable work possible. It has been rewarding to see the event create a sustainable northern art market in a city which boasts such a dynamic arts and cultural scene.”
As well as presenting an inspiring collection of art, Buy Art Fair, along with The Manchester Contemporary, will offer a series of informative talks by prominent figures from the art world.
Critically engaged contemporary art
Running alongside Buy Art Fair is The Manchester Contemporary which will feature critically engaged work from UK and international artists. The Manchester Contemporary will be curated, for the third year, by Manchester-based gallery, The International 3.
Location, location
Buy Art Fair will return to the thriving hub of Spinningfields in the heart of Manchester and will be housed in a large marquee situated in the centre of Hardman Square, an area surrounded by bars, restaurants and designer shops. A few steps away, in Quay House, The Manchester Contemporary will take up residence for the weekend-long event.
