Aurelia Magazine is a publication for the personal stories of marginalised genders (women, non-binary people and trans men). This event will be their first party, continuing their work of bringing people together, cultivating community and encouraging creativity.
Kya Buller, Editor-in-Chief says, “Join us as we celebrate the past year and look forward to 2022. We’re so proud of all of the work we’ve published and want to raise a glass to everyone who has written for us, and everyone who has spent time reading Aurelia Magazine. It means the world — so much so that we decided it was finally time to hold a party in the city where our work is done!”
After an amazing start to the year, the independent publication led by three Northern women of colour, announced they were able to move away from their volunteer-led model and would be able to pay writers for their work going forward thanks to the self-funding of the team as well as donations.
Taking place at Ancoats Coffee Co on Friday 10th December at 6.30pm, attendees can expect a selection of drinks supplied by Manchester-based businesses at the bar, including an Aurelia cocktail and mocktail. There will of course be great coffee and plenty of non-alcoholic options. Aureli Good Time will focus on celebrating Aurelia’s work and the people they have platformed, whilst providing a selection of great tunes and the opportunity for guests to write a card for somebody they love, whether choosing to take it home or have it published on Aurelia Magazine.
All attendees will be given a goody bag and all income made from ticket sales will help Aurelia Magazine continue to pay writers in 2022.
Aurelia Magazine was created whilst Kya was still studying. When starting to pitch her work, she says she “felt disheartened by our sensationalist media landscape that often seeks to divide, so I founded a platform that publishes the personal stories and opinions of marginalised genders, encouraging us all to slow down and connect with each other, whilst uplifting the voices that need it most.”
Every member of the team working for Aurelia Magazine is a person of colour living in the North of England. Editor-in-Chief Kya Buller and Assistant Editor Amelia Ellis live in Manchester, and Deputy Editor Shahed Ezaydi lives in Sheffield after graduating from The University of Manchester.
