Much-loved mobile eatery – Stretford Canteen – will be heading to Stretford Food Hall this weekend, with a run of three dates serving up breakfast and brunch until 1pm.

The history of Stretford Canteen is a rather interesting one, as owner Josephine is actually the daughter of Maureen & David Sandwith, the couple who owned the famed Beaujolais French restaurant in the city centre through the 70s, 80s and 90s.

Ask most people in the city of a certain age where the best place to get a Steak Au Poivre in the 80s and they’d have said the Beaujolais, a restaurant that brought the best bits of Lyonnaise cuisine to the people of Manchester.

Bemoaning the lack of places to eat locally in the area, Josephine and her husband Dean decided to create Stretford Canteen, and galvanised by the fantastic reaction to their idea, the pair opened up at the local greasy spoon – Pines Pantry.

Over the last 5 years Stretford Canteen has cemented itself as one of M32’s most cherished mobile eateries.

Combining a love of classic French cuisine, traditional British dishes and local produce they have done countless more pop-ups as well as providing catering for local community events.

So you’ll now have the chance to try some of their fantastic dishes, with a breakfast and brunch menu served at Stretford Mall until 1pm. There’s Croque Monsieurs, Sourdough Toasts, Mackerel Pate and my personal favourite – Buckwheat Pancakes from Breton (and topped with poached Yorkshire rhubarb, syrup and chantilly cream).

The Stretford Canteen will be at the Food Hall on the following dates:

Sat 26th and Sun 27th Feb
Sat 5th and Sun 6th March
Sat 12th and Sun 13th March
