ART EXHIBITION
David Shrigley: HOW ARE YOU FEELING?
Until Sun 6 Jan 2013 (free, Galleries 1, 2 & 3)
In October, we are delighted to present a major exhibition of new and recent work by acclaimed British artist David Shrigley. HOW ARE YOU FEELING? will feature a range of drawings, sculpture, animated film and never-seen-before live performance featuring local actors. Taking you on a skewed, cathartic journey through the clever, amusing and raw world of Shrigley, this extraordinary exhibition will offer art therapy to combat what the artist refers to as ‘an increasingly crazy and poorly signposted world’.
CORNERHOUSE PROJECTS
Fraser Chapman
Fri 16 Nov – Sun 6 Jan (free, Café & Bar)
For this show Manchester-based Fraser Chapman is presenting two bodies of work. In the Bar are a series of large colourful disk shaped paintings that map the different rock types found on the moon. They are accurate depictions of the geological makeup of the lunar surface, originally visualised by the astronomical community. Chapman has taken these maps and adjusted the colours, playing with their graphic potential. In the Café are a series of small mass-produced canvases of the kind typically found in thrift stores. Fraser has ‘added’ to them by ‘subtracting’ their content. What is left are floating indications of the total scene, now hidden under a flat surface of white paint. Chapman is highly active in Manchester as an artist and supporter of creative practice, through his nomadic shop ‘Grotto’. NEW BRITISH CINEMA QUARTERLY
British Shorts Programme – The Joy of Six
Tue 20 Nov, 18:20
This November, NBCQ presents a stunning selection of independent short films showcasing the best of up- and-coming British screen talent. The selection includes films from emerging and award-winning directing talent including Douglas Hart, Warp Films (Matthew Holness), Will Jewell and Chris Foggin. You may not be 100% familiar with the talent behind the camera, but you’ll definitely recognise some of the cream of British acting talent in front of it; among the stars featured are Dame Judi Dench (trying her hand at online dating!), Peter Mullan, Tom Hiddleston and Luke Treadaway. These are the award-winning British shorts making a splash at festivals and showing that innovative short film production is alive and kicking in Britain today.
