This year’s Manchester Art Fair is set to take place across the 4th, 5th and 6th of November, and renowned artist, Stanley Chow is playing a huge part in the programme.
Born and raised in Manchester to Hong Kong parents, Stanley Chow is most well-known for his portraiture of celebrities, pop stars and politicians, recently working on a campaign for Manchester mayor, Andy Burnham.
Manchester served as the place Chow began his career. Starting off as a DJ in the city’s local nightclubs and bars, Chow began designing flyers and posters for underground events, most notably Night & Day Cafe – where you’ll find a number of his portraits now.
But Chow’s illustration career really took off when his art was spotted by Meg and Jack White from The White Stripes who went on to commission his work for their limited edition album, Icky Thump, for which he was later nominated for a Grammy Award.
His simple yet bold style manages to convincingly capture the character of each person he draws, and is now widely recognised.
For this year’s Art Fair, Chow is producing a specially commissioned piece of artwork, which will then be sold on a limited edition at the event. The piece will be based on the love he has for Manchester through a cityspace, a change from his usual portrait style.
Going right back to his roots, Chow will also be spinning some records at the first day of the fair and giving a tour of the exhibitions, alongside a Q&A session, which will focus on his influences, practices and what he has in store for his future work.
The fifteenth edition of the Manchester Art Fair will open at Manchester Central with a VIP preview on Friday 4th November with complimentary drinks and a DJ set by Chow. It will then open to the public on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th November with over 8,000 people anticipated to attend.
