Manchester’s very own Little Sparrow released the video for her brand new single ‘Sending The Message’ on March 26th. The Single is available to download. Here Manchester photographer Shay Rowan talks us through the video.
On a theatre stage shrouded in darkness a figure slowly emerges, lit only by a shaft of light overhead.
As he begins to twist and turn in a series of intricate dance moves, a gentle guitar introduction is followed by an emotionally charged vocal and the words that will form a heartfelt plea for this voice to be heard.
“Sending the Message” is the latest release from singer/songwriter Little Sparrow and presented in keeping with her hauntingly evocative style questions whether in an age where so many methods of communication available to us are impersonal and dehumanised will anyone take the time to listen and respond to a message sent straight from the heart?

Throughout the video in a series of transitions she blends in and out of view as her desperate attempts to share her feelings seemingly fail to reach the unresponsive subject – a role played by Martin-john Mürtha whose delicate but powerful dance sequences add so much effect to Little Sparrow’s tenderly beautiful vocal.
The dramatic accompaniment provided by cellist Sarah Dale and percussionist Mitch Oldham is totally captivating and the production qualities of her long time collaborator Nick Crofts are as ever consistently excellent.
Filmed in the atmospheric surroundings of The Lantern Theatre, Sheffield the images cut back and forth from the cool darkness of the stage scenes to the crimson tinged warmth of the theatre seats where she engages the camera – eyes filled with sadness and words which whilst carrying the pain brought about by separation, still offer a glimpse of optimism – a ray of hope that with a willingness to listen and respond love can find a way to cross the void.
Little Sparrow is due to play The Castle Hotel on 29th April. Find out more about Little Sparrow on her webpage and Facebook page.
