The closure of Sale’s Foodhall earlier this year was cause for concern for the South Manchester town’s otherwise thriving food scene. But a new restaurant has announced it will move into the vacated space.
Canteena Bar and Grill is the new tenant for the former Foodhall space. The project comes from Danielle Condron and Lisa Kettle whose much loved Sale pub The Bridge also closed earlier this year. Canteena Bar and Grill will specialise in Irish Dexter and Brazilian steak but will also serve up everything from carpaccio to duck curry with vegan and veggie options too.
The venue will be split into two halves with one half, the bar, serving drinks and light bites. There will be more formal dining in the restaurant half where large groups of up to 30 can be catered for. There will also be special ticketed events such as a three-course steak dinner with paired wine on Thursdays. The new project is part of the town centre’s regeneration project from Altered Space.
Danielle Condron and Lisa Kettle said: “We love Sale and its community and wanted to make sure everyone can enjoy the incredible food and new cosy, contemporary feel at Canteena. We have worked hard to cover every price range when it comes to the menu. We want Canteena to be Sale’s home away from home when it comes to sharing food and drink with the people closest to you.”
In other Sale news, Chorlton seafood restaurant The Oystercatcher is set to finally open its Sale restaurant this summer after announcing it was on the way almost a year ago. Owned by Recep Canliisik and Duncan Ranyard, The Oystercatcher’s regularly changing menu is ideal for fish lovers with plenty of oysters of course but also dishes like crab arancini, swordfish Penang curry and French style halibut steak with Pommes Anna. It also does British classics like fish n chips and chargrilled steak with veggie options available too.
Owner Duncan Ranyard said: “Our restaurant in Chorlton has proved very popular over the last five years, with lots of guests travelling from Sale and further afield to dine with us. We have loved sharing our offering with the people of Chorlton and when we were asked to become part of the exciting new development in Stanley Square we jumped at the chance.”
Sale is also getting a new bar in June called Pray Tell, which will move into the space formerly occupied by Draft Bar serving craft beers, natural wines and properly good cocktails. We sat down for a chat with the new owners of Pray Tell recently so look out for a bigger feature on this new bar soon.
These additions join loads of other excellent food and drink spots in Sale like The Perfect Match, Greens, Blanchflower, Cork of the North and Sugo to keep Sale’s foodie crown well and truly polished.
