A breath of fresh air in the heart of the Northern Quarter, Evelyn’s combines Manchester’s industrial heritage with a not-so-subtle love for all things natural. The first thing you’re likely to spot through the exterior windows are the abundant hanging baskets overflowing with plant life. The largest of these, and we really do mean large, occupies a prominent position in the centre of the ceiling, greenery cascading above a generously proportioned middle dining bench ideal for large groups, with smaller round tables spaciously arranged through the rest of the restaurant. The impact is an informal oasis littered with industrial-leaning fixtures and fittings, and guests will quickly realise equally casual but innovative dishes are the order of the day when it comes to the kitchen itself.
The brunch menu at Evelyn’s is just one case in point. Order the Bircher to indulge in overnight oats, shredded apple and seasonal fruits, cacao granola and grains — an ideal start to any relaxed day. Meanwhile, the Gravadlax of blueberry cured sea trout, dill, zesty labneh and focaccia; and the spiced tomato, red pepper, feta, egg, coriander and sourdough Shakshuka betray a penchant for mixing up cuisines, although those looking for more traditional options can still grab Steak & Egg cooked to their liking. Choices for lunch are similarly varied, from an international take on English Fish & Chips with tempura sea bass star of the show, to the ECB Burger topped with kimchi mayo. On top of the wide range of fresh coffees and teas — highlights including Blood Orange Rooibos, Organic Mango Matcha, Vietnamese Iced Coffee, and Charcoal Lavender Latte— you can also indulge in unique cocktails such as the Japanese Whisky Sour, Yuzu Spritz, or refreshing Romanis. Of course, there’s also a great wine cellar and solid choice of beers, but that’s another story.
