Wigan Council’s planning committee has given its seal of approval to an ambitious £135 million masterplan aimed at revitalising Wigan town centre. This major project will transform the area into an enticing nightlife destination, boosting the local economy by drawing in visitors from across the region.
This plan is part of a broader regeneration scheme for the former Galleries shopping centre site, located just off Market Street in Wigan town centre. The planning committee has also endorsed a developer’s proposal for an expansive 84,000 sq ft Multi Media Centre (MMC) and leisure facility, set to augment the transformation of the site further.
The council-approved overhaul will feature a six-screen, 700-seat cinema, a multi-lane bowling alley, indoor mini golf, a climbing wall, and a “wide range” of other indoor leisure activities. The project also encompasses a public events space, a games arcade, and several new bars and restaurants. Local Councillor Laura Flynn envisions these developments will make Wigan a prime destination for nightlife.
Cityheart, the developers behind the masterplan, are optimistic about the opportunities these plans will provide for the town. They believe the council’s approval paves the way for transforming Wigan into a “thriving mixed-use town centre neighbourhood” where both residents and visitors can enjoy relaxed time with family and friends.
The approved MMC plan is a critical part of the larger Galleries site redevelopment scheme. This multi-phase development programme aims to create one of the UK’s “most innovative low carbon regeneration projects,” according to Wigan Council, and will “transform” the town centre in several substantial ways.
The ambitious plan will bring almost 500 homes across seven new residential buildings, a 144-bedroom hotel, a new market hall and food court, and newly landscaped public spaces, including a square for events and performances.
Warren Taylor, Development Director at Cityheart, lauds the approval of the masterplan. He believes that top-notch leisure facilities will attract not only a broader audience but also prime operators and food and drink brands. Announcements regarding the addition of these tenants are expected later this year.
The council’s approval represents a significant step forward in bringing this transformational scheme to fruition. Taylor expresses enthusiasm about achieving the next stage of the project, which will help redefine Wigan as an appealing leisure and nightlife destination.
