An Italian trattoria bridges the gap between the formal white linen of a ristorante and the elevated-cafeteria simplicity of an osteria. Rooted in rustic tradition, these are the places you fall in love with thanks to their atmosphere, frequent lack of printed menus and decanted wine. Sorella, one of many spots we highly recommend in Uppermill, certainly lives up to that heritage in some ways. Situated in a historic stone building in one of Greater Manchester’s most picturesque corners, inside the decor is thoroughly understated modern chic, and the vibe laidback.
The aromas scream authenticity from the moment you step in from the world outside, and as the team make clear, they’ve got the attitude down to a fine art: “At Sorella, we believe in the magic of authentic Italian cuisine. Our menu is crafted with love, featuring classic dishes made from the finest ingredients. From hearty pasta to delightful desserts, each bite transports you to the heart of Italy,” the team explain. “Enjoy a relaxed dining experience in our intimate setting, perfect for family gatherings, romantic dinners, or catching up with friends. Our friendly staff are dedicated to making you feel at home, ensuring every visit is special.”
But, of course, food is the real star of the show. Start with olives, tagliere di antipasto (meats, cheeses, breads), or penne all aglio (simple pasta with garlic, rosemary and parsley). Primi covers steak tartare to beetroot carpaccio, capesante (scallops with truffled cauliflower and parmesan) and costolette dello chef (spare ribs in homemade sauce.) Pasta options are extensive, including spaghetti pescatori (mixed seafood) and alla puttanesca (San Marzano tomato, olives, anchovies, capers), orecchiette lamb (slow cooked and divine) and orzo with basil pesto and sun-blushed tomatoes. Pesce is incredible and to the point — sea bass panfried with spider crab, spicy nduja, ragu and pecorino. Meanwhle, Carne choices include the iconic chicken Milanese, anatra (confit duck) and carre di agnello (pistachio crushed rack of lamb). The excellent pizzas, are another story, as is the mouthwatering selection of Old Country wines.
