In life, things are usually better when people work together. That philosophy is certainly central to Kobean Roasters. Starting out as a wholesaler selling coffee online only, today the business has grown to incorporate an IRL premises serving the thirsty people of Manchester, specialising in “interesting, rare and experimental” micro-lots. Take-away focused, the operation stands out even among the super-competitive Ancoats food and drink landscape because of what it sells, and the approach to sourcing produce. Simply put, this place is all about collaboration and versatility, and from a customer point of view that means you can indulge in something different every day of the week, whether that’s freshly brewed beans or baked delicacies.
Simply put, the shop serves incredible coffees from award-winning, legendary producers like Diego Bermudez and Nestor Lasso, and emerging heroes such as Alfredo Castaño. Many are chosen not just because of their incredible flavours and aromas, but the process behind the taste. Climate-conscious, Kobean strives to stock beans which have benefited from value-adding post-harvest techniques. So think anaerobic and controlled fermentations, thermal shock, fruit infusions and experiments with yeast, with many methods developed to increase resilience and yield without using additional resources.
The team are also resolute in their commitment to more equity within the industry, and believe “producer representation is key to what we do. We work with producers year on year and build long-term relationships; telling their story, understanding them and their coffee is really important.” That attitude carries through to the cakes and pastries sitting on the counter. Over the years, Kobean have worked with the best independent bakeries in Manchester, partnering with the likes of Pollen, Longbois, Half Dozen Other, La Chouquette, Patels Pies and Yellowhammer. A string of marriages made in heaven, then, no wonder the address is so popular.
