Salford has long-since shirked its reputation as Greater Manchester’s ‘second city’. The sprawl across the Irwell plays by its own rules and does things in its own way, nurturing some of the region’s coolest districts in the process. Quietly, Monton has been establishing its reputation as one of those neighbourhoods. Take Edison Bar, for example: a family-run cafe by day which transforms into a lively bar from late afternoon onwards, operations spread across three floors of a terraced address much like a hospitality Tardis. There’s far more on the inside than you’d think from the outside.
For the sake of clarity, then, let’s make our way up the building, starting in the basement. Down here, a quirky underground environment sets the stage for a variety of music events, including DJ-led parties and bands. A subterranean haven for hedonists who don’t want to trek into Central Salford, or head over the gap into Manchester itself. Next, climb the stairs to discover Edison’s largest space, the ground floor bar, which is best known for its regular live music performances.
Meanwhile, a glass terrace to the front with a retractable roof provides a wonderful al fresco alternative at Edison when the weather is glorious, and some protection when it’s, well, not so glorious. Third but not least, the upper floor of Edison is dedicated to a ‘hidden’ bar, and what could be Monton’s best kept secret drinking hole. The Tiki Monkey is the most recent addition to the address, and has garnered a strong following among party goers thanks to its combination of tropical decor, old school R&B and hip hop tunes, and a range of exclusive cocktails we you’ll struggle to find elsewhere in Greater Manchester. Which is saying something considering how many cocktail menus the city and wider region are home to.
