If you’ve spent much time in picturesque Saddleworth, you’ll know a few things already. Firstly, this corner of Greater Manchester has an inimitable Pennine charm, surrounded as it is by some of the North’s most spectacular scenery in the form of the moorlands. Secondly, Caffè Grande Abaco is a bonafide institution, an upmarket coffeehouse, wine bar and informal eatery housed in a stunning Grade II listed building, inspired by the great European caffeine spots of yesteryear. A place you can easily spend all day indulging, watching the world go by, and sampling some delicious food and drink, with many items imported from the continent. First opening its doors circa 2021 a hop, skip and jump away from the Caffè, Veloce is another epicurean must in the middle of Uppermill.

Run by the same team behind the aforementioned Abaco, Veloce is the retail and takeaway arm of the business and focuses on grab-and-go refuelling and luxurious local produce. More so, it does both exceptionally well, but let’s begin with the menu itself.

Regulars of the main location will certainly feel at home, with a range of specialist coffees on offer, from Matcha Latte to cooling Iced Freddos, with or without that extra shot of espresso to really get things going. You’ll also find the usual classics, breakfast and speciality teas, and a range of soft drinks. Beyond this, the baking game here is exceptional, from Bavarian slices to macaroons, croissants of all varieties and hazelnut cream-filled barchette. Still want more? How about pastel del nata and cannoli? Not looking for something so sweet? Fear not, you’ll find a range of freshly prepared savoury bakes and snacks at Veloce, too. All of which is before we mention the shop itself, which celebrates some of the best delicacies made in the area, showcasing British produce, producers and growers at their absolute finest.
