Maggie’s Manchester, the charity which provides free practical, emotional and social support for people with cancer and their family and friends, is bringing the Culture Crawl to Manchester for the first time.
You can find secret spaces and happy faces on this unique twilight walk next month. Part night-walk, part cultural adventure, the Culture Crawl Manchester is inspired by the architectural design and programme of support offered at Maggie’s, as walkers get special access to the city’s treasures and pleasures, discovering cultural, architectural and artistic delights along the way.
Registration is open now for the 10km walk on Friday 30th September starting at 6.30pm, which begins at Manchester’s new landmark building designed by Lord Norman Foster, the highly acclaimed Maggie’s Centre on Kinnaird Road in Withington.
Supported by actress Julie Hesmondhalgh, the walk is being planned with cultural chiefs across the city to open their doors to as many folk as possible.
Walkers start with an experience in the Maggie’s Centre itself and then make their way into and across the city taking in cultural treats and surprises including Bollywood in Rusholme, special access to the a Whitworth Art Gallery exhibition, an exclusive recital at the Royal Northern College of Music viewed from beanbags, food, drink, street music and more!
Then it’s on to the long lost history of the exciting London Road Fire Station and other hidden gems.
Walkers will be sponsored to raise funds for the Maggie’s Centre, where 60,000 visitors are expected each year to get support with the emotional, practical and social challenges of living with cancer.
Sinead Collins, Centre Head of Maggie’s Manchester, who will be welcoming walkers to the Centre on the night, said: “Everyone is intrigued by the tremendous history of Manchester and we are delighted that our iconic building can help to open up Manchester’s cultural spaces to entertain and enthuse our supporters. It will be very special that the walk sets off from our new Maggie’s Centre which is an architectural treat in itself and the only building in Manchester designed by Normal Foster. As a charity Maggie’s Manchester relies on donations to continue to develop our unique, high quality programme of support. We hope people get behind the event to have a great night and help us support as many people affected by cancer across the North West, as well as their family and friends.”
Registration for the event is £20 and participants are asked to aim to raise sponsorship of £80, all of which will help the charity provide emotional, social and practical support to people with cancer. The Centre Fundraising Manager will be on hand to help with fundraising ideas.
Built in the grounds of the Christie Hospital, Maggie’s Manchester is a warm and welcoming place, with qualified professionals on hand to offer an evidence-based core programme of support that has been shown to improve physical and emotional wellbeing.
The centre was opened in April by Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and welcomes people from all walks of life to its various workshops and calming spaces and garden, designed by Chelsea medal winner Dan Pearson.
