As an Oldham lad this news is rather welcome, and even more close to my heart – I once worked within the rather splendid ODEON cinema set within the town’s old Town Hall – and the space is perfect.
I’m getting ahead of myself – let’s start at the beginning. Oldham Council have announced that they have plans to create a new Food Hall within the Egyptian Rooms of the Grade-II listed Old Town Hall.
The Town Hall received a massive injection of cash a few years back (£37m in fact) which saw it transform from a long-empty derelict into a stunning 7 screen cinema (with many original features) and restaurants just below in the basement.
Well, the Egyptian Rooms are the last part of the project to be completed and the council have been keen to hold them back for just the right use. And they think they’ve found it.
Accommodating up to 200 diners and utilising both indoor and outdoor space, the new Food Hall will feature 6 (hopefully) independent operators. If they’re looking for someone to make great butties – me mam runs a sandwich shop in Royton – she’ll do it for you.
Cllr Sean Fielding, council leader, said: “This would be an exciting new food and drink experience for Oldham and a great addition to the Old Town Hall and the fantastic businesses already based there and across the town centre.
“We’re committed to ensuring Oldham has a vibrant leisure and night-time economy and we are confident a market like this will be welcomed by residents and visitors.”
If the plans are approved then they’re set to get the Egyptian Rooms Food Hall opened by Summer 2021. Good luck there!
