Stockport will be marking the festive season this month with a town-centre wide Christmas celebration.

The one-day-only Christmas takeover will see the town centre streets filled with a huge line-up of over 60 shows and hundreds of artists, dancers and performers all bringing a carnival atmosphere to this year’s Greater Manchester Town of Culture.

Stockport’s Spectacular Sunday will take place on Sunday 19 November at sites across the town centre, including Merseyway Shopping Centre, Market Place and the trendy Underbanks.

Visitors will also be able to enjoy live music and festive food stalls as they make their way around the street performances, with plenty to enjoy for all ages.

A grand celebration will take place at Market Place, where Mrs Boon’s Tea Party will be providing sublime cakes, teas and tunes alongside Inspiral Carpets and Manchester legend Clint Boon.

New Orleans marching band Mr Wilson’s Second Liners will be playing a set of carnival covers of popular 90s hits. Visitors will also have a chance to boogie at the Christmas dance-along with Granny Turismo.

Over at the Underbanks, Stockport landmark Strawberry Studios will host Take Me To The Bridge, a grand concert piano recital showcasing classic tunes that were all previously recorded at the historic studios.

There will also be walkabout acts including giant puppets roaming the cobbled Underbanks area as well as a stunning performance from local aerial specialists Blush Aerial Dance, with gymnasts suspended above the piano.

At Merseyway, families can find fairies, penguins, dinosaurs and even dancing snowflakes all whilst enjoying a soundtrack of favourite Christmas tunes by Santa street band Red Hot Santas.

Cllr Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council, said: “Our ever-popular Christmas event is even bigger and better this year to celebrate our Town of Culture status and to finish the year on a real high, with this free family-friendly event. Christmas is a magical time of year and our town centre will be transformed to bring some festive cheer to our many residents and visitors and showcase our fantastic town.

“This is the icing on the cake to a successful 2023 for our Town of Culture programme, which our local communities have really embraced, with so much more to come over the coming months.”
