A Play performed by a Potato is coming to one of Salford's Backstreet Boozers

Potatohead is a one-woman play performed and created by puppeteer, Freddie Hayes. And yes, it is as bonkers as it sounds.

Hailed as a ‘starch’ raving mad production, Potatohead will make its debut at Salford’s The King Arms Theatre on Thursday after already receiving rave reviews from both the Camden and Brighton Fringe.

The show, which has been written by performance artist and puppeteer, Freddie Hayes, follows the story of humble spud Charlotte who dreams of becoming a stand-up comedian.

Influenced by elements of Marlowe’s Elizabethan tragedy, Doctor Faustus, the play has unmissable themes of old-school entertainment and vintage cabaret. You can also expect cultural references, audience participation, video montages and, of course, potatoes, puns and loads of puppets  – in short, an unadulterated celebration of silliness.

The one-hour show explores themes of self-destruction, growth, consumerism, hedonism and identity and is an ode to Hayes’ unmatched talent as a comedic performer.

Leeds-based Hayes studied puppetry back in 2015 at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and since graduating in 2018 she has been creating solo shows and performing around the UK comedy, festival and cabaret circuit.

She is very much a fringe-centric performer, hovering between the lines of childish puppetry and late night entertainment. Her love for the absurd is prevalent in her work and she wishes to convey the stupidity of life. Often autobiographical, Freddie reflects on her life through relatable characters, scenarios and themes.

As well as performance, Freddie creates bespoke puppets, props and costumes. Using materials such as foam, paper craft, wood and found objects. Her biggest influences are Paula Rego, Bobby Baker, Twin Peaks and Neville Tranter.

Potatohead will debut at The Kings Arms Theatre in Salford this Thursday with two productions, one at 7pm and one at 9pm.
