Named “Britain’s most bohemian back-street boozer” by the Guardian back in 2011, Salford’s Kings Arms pub has been lauded as one of the UK’s best multi-purpose venues, with everything from art exhibitions, fringe festivals, gigs, poetry nights, and a million more things in-between happening on a weekly basis.
They recently re-introduced their theatre programme on their upstairs stage, and they’ll be welcoming a “love story to the history of Moss Side” this October.
The theatre has announced the opening of ‘Remembering the Way’, a light and positive play with themes that challenge institutional bias, narratives that include a prismatic perspective on the history of Moss Side and a message that reflects on the importance of family.
Remembering the Way, written and directed by Curtis Cole from Moss Side, and produced by Rising Moon Productions, offers a unique and overlapping dialogue that makes the audience travel into time to experience the intense life of a black man, recently diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimers trying to reconnect and make good with his estranged son and past.
“It is smashing the stereotype and cracking the idea of the black man stereotype – lazy and doesn’t work, and showcases a hardworking black man who made his way through and got on with living his life and pushing through with his family,” says actor and writer Curtis Cole
Filled with popular music to fuel 90’s nostalgia, the play brings light to ongoing issues currently faced by ordinary citizens, like social care funding which makes it relevant for now.
“One of the main subjects of the play is Alzheimer’s, and the play hinges on the idea of getting the main protagonist into care. Recently, we have had the whole conservative hike on tax – taxing the people who cannot generally afford the care, so it addresses this issue especially within the black community, and I think that makes it relevant with all that has been going on recently,” says Colin Connor, producer, Rising Moon Productions.

It is scheduled to play from the 17th – 21st of October with performances starting at 7:30pm daily.
