From independent cinemas in the ‘burbs to larger chains showing blockbusters, we’re a city that loves its films. So if football isn’t your thing this summer, movie fans can get stuck into a whole heap of new films and exclusive screenings at this year’s Manchester Indian Film Festival.
Returning for its 15th year, the event showcases the best of South Asian film, with a packed programme of features, shorts, series, gaming and augmented reality projects to enjoy.
Stopping off for just over a week in Manchester from Wednesday 26 June to Friday 5 July, this year’s festivities kick off with an opening night at The Carlton Club, celebrating the legacy of South Asians in British music.
Explore The Legacy delves into the pioneering spirit of South Asian trailblazers who remain integral to the landscape of British music. Artists, creatives and collaborators are also invited to connect following the screening during a special networking event.
The following week of events includes a Q&A with prolific filmmaker Aparna Sen, who will chat about her incredible six decades in cinema.
Festival highlights also include the return of Too Desi Too Queer, the festival’s LGBTQIA+ showcase, which encompasses a collection of groundbreaking queer short films as well as a women’s only screening of Pakistani film Wakhri, which centres on a widowed school teacher who becomes a viral sensation on social media.
The Manchester Indian Film Festival takes place across venues in Didsbury, Bolton and Whalley Range from Wednesday 26 June to Friday 5 July.
