Over the past 30 years, Mackinnon & Saunders, the Altrincham-based animation company, has brought stories to life through model-making and animation production.

Working with some of the best known directors in the industry, such as Tim Burton, Wes Anderson and, more recently, Guillermo del Toro, a new exhibition at Sale Waterside is celebrating 30 years of the pioneering company.

The detailed exhibition explores its team of local animators and model-makers who have, over the years, connected with audiences across the world. It showcases the skill and artistry behind some of the most iconic characters from stop motion animation.

A series of black and photographs from behind the scenes at Mackinnon & Saunders are on display, alongside a mix of maquettes and puppets from films including; Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr Fox, The Corpse Bride, Bob the Builder and newer films from the likes of Guillermo Del Toro and Netflix trilogy The House

Garnering praise from a wealth of film greats, Tim Burton said this about the studio: “They do such beautiful work. They really raised it to a new level for The Corpse Bride. These puppets are so real, they are so sensitive and textural, you really do believe they are alive.”

This exhibition is in partnership with Manchester Animation Festival and is FREE to attend. It is open now from Monday – Saturday 10am – 5pm.
