The 2001 film Hedwig and the Angry Inch explores the story of gender-queer Punk Rock singer, Hedwig from East Berlin as they travel the US touring with their band.

The film, which made its debut in 2001, became a cult classic after exploring the realms of an unlikely love story rooted in gender, politics and self-acceptance.

The story centres on Hedwig, a singer in a punk-rock band who’s moved from East Berlin to Kansas following botched gender reassignment surgery that left them with an ‘angry inch’.

Hedwig has their heart broken twice, first by the GI who lured them into the operation to allow them to marry and emigrate, and then by Tommy Gnosis, who fell in love with Hedwig but subsequently stole their songs and used them to become the rock star Hedwig always wanted to be.

It’s a tale that many have a deep connection to, not just because it’s hilarious and heart-breaking with an effortlessly cool and catchy soundtrack, but because it taps into the question of identity and how it’s shaped by our relationships.

The onstage adaptation of the movie doesn’t veer too far from the original storyline, and Divina De Campo has already gotten rave reviews as it made its debut at Leeds Playhouse this week.

It’s a euphoric, rock n roll performance that’s hailed as a darkly humorous self-love story, powered by a live band, epic rock-inspired music and hard-hitting lyrics.

Just like the film, Hedwig and the Angry Inch onstage explores gender identity, acceptance and the freedom to be whoever you want to be.

The show is directed by Jamie Fletcher and stars no other than divine drag queen, Divina De Campo. The musical breaks all the rules – challenging us all to create a world where everyone is valued and everyone is loved.

It begins at HOME on Wednesday 27th April until Wednesday 11th May, and tickets are available to book now via the link below.
