4.5 miles South of Glossop and in the heart of the peak district you’ll stumble across The Pack Horse, a traditional gastropub offering seasonal food with a snapshot of the British food calendar.

The breathtaking location has been described as being the perfect setting for a ‘fish-out-of-water Policewoman TV Series’, basically, it screams Marcella, and its newest win is in the form of a place on Estrella’s top 50 Gastropub list.

Luke Payne, Owner and Chef describes the pub’s menu mantra as “foods that I love to cook and eat” and with a focus on sustainability, the pub sources its produce locally. Butcher John’s co-located abattoiir is just 4 miles from the pub, and the pub’s fish comes from Peterhead fish market that provides some of the finest North Sea seafood and Scottish day-boat catches.

The venue found a place in Estrella’s 2021 top 100 gastropubs list, however, this year the pub snuck its way into the top 50, and rightly so!

Payne said: “We joined the longlist at number 76 last year, which was a huge achievement, so when we heard that we’d made the top 50 we were ecstatic! It’s something that I honestly thought we’d never do.

“We’re just a small family business in the middle of the peak district, things like this don’t happen to places like us!”

The pub is the closest gastropub to Manchester in the list, and its picturesque location makes it the perfect place for a stop off after a big January walk to blow off those Christmas cobwebs. The significance of being recognised as one of the best after a whirlwind couple of years for the hospitality industry is also huge for Luke and the team.

“The last 18 months have been an absolute rollercoaster for not just us, but the entire hospitality industry, so to be honoured with this award after such a difficult time means the absolute world to us,” furthered Payne.

The Pack Horse has also gathered rave reviews recently from The Sunday Times and the Michelin Star guide, so if you’re looking for a city escape in the new year, make sure you pay a visit to Hayfield’s top gastropub!
