Desert Island Dumplings has recently opened in Ancoats General Stores, and aside from its menu of exquisite vegan dishes, it has now announced a one-off gay dating event taking place on Thursday 17th November.
The restaurant’s founder, Lucy was inspired to host the event after meeting the heads behind the Liverpool based ‘Bored Of Dating Apps’ (BODA) last month.
“I was sorting the food at GRUB while BODA hosted a dating night for straight singles and it got me thinking about doing something for my own community,” she began.
Desert Island Dumplings is rooted in the LGBTQ+ community, and has served dumplings at the past two Manchester Prides. “We were also at Chester Pride a few years ago, which was ace – the Cheeky girls and Atomic Kitten played!”
Lucy recognises that it’s not always easy to find the one: “I always imagined I’d meet someone in the supermarket, I don’t know why, I guess that’s where I spend most of my time, and there’s something romantic about locking eyes over a pink lady apple.”
“I ended up meeting my girlfriend on Tinder but it took us two years to actually go on a date… I’m hoping this dumpling night will help speed things along a bit for other lonely lesbians.”
The Dumpling Dating Night will take place from 8pm and will involve a dumpling making workshop as well as a dumpling eating mixer. “I’m thinking about doing Lobster dumplings as they’re our most romantic flavour,” said Lucy.
The event is 18+ and open to anyone that identifies themselves as being part of the LGBTQ+ community.
“Dating can be awkward and weird but making dumplings is fun and tasty and great for anyone that gets shaky hands on a first date! I’m hoping that this time next year we’ll be catering some of these weddings,” jokes Lucy, “it’s gonna be a fun night.”
Tickets are £25 and are available from Desert Island Dumplings General Stores site or via the link below.
