Ever since John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, decided one day to invent the perfect lunchtime meal, the humble butty has travelled across the globe and been adopted into almost all cultures and cuisines.
There are wraps in the Middle East, there’s Vada Pavs in India, Tacos in Mexico and the classic Philly Cheesesteak over in the States – and one thing binds them all together – they’re all bloody delicious!
One country which has embraced the sarnie for many, many years is of course Spain – who’s ‘BOCADILLOS’ are available on every street corner and in every taverna and tapas bar. Typically a crunchy baguette, it is then filled with an array of cheese, meat and vegetables – perfect alongside a coffee in the morning or a few beers in the afternoon.
Looking to transport us all to Madrid for our lunch is CoffeeB, who are currently operating from local independent Spanish restaurant La Bandera – offering up a brand-new menu of delicious Bocadillos – including the world-class ‘Bocadillo de Calamares‘.
A staple in any self-respecting Spanish seaside town or village, the Bocadillos de Calamares (£4.50) is the best because it’s SO simple; rings of fresh fried squid on a baguette with a squeeze of lemon juice and a smudge of garlic aioli. That’s it.
Also on the menu is the Bocadillo de Chorizo (£3.75) with Iberico Spanish chorizo, olive oil and fresh rocket, and the Bocadillo de Albondigas (£4) with homemade meatballs and mozzarella cheese.
There’s an impressive selection available, with chorizo and manchego, pulled pork, Spanish tortilla, Serrano ham and even the loaded Bocadillo De Ternera (£4.50) – juicy steak with piquillo peppers and aioli.
The Bocadillos at CoffeeB are available Wednesday to Friday from 8am – 3pm, Saturday & Sunday 9am – 4pm. They are available as part of a £6 MEAL DEAL which includes a drink and a snack.
