The Manchester Youth Zone is aiming to raise £20,000 to give out presents, Christmas dinners and care packages to people who need it over the festive period.

The Harpurhey-based charity needs a last push of £5000 by 11 December to have its fundraising matched as part of the Big Give Campaign.

It aims to cook and serve Christmas dinner for 100 people on Christmas Day, with party games, gifts from Santa in their Grotto, and even a chance to meet real reindeer.

“For many of the young people and families we work with, without this, they would go without a Christmas celebration,” the charity said.

The funds raised will also go towards care packages, vouchers and hampers for local families, as well as day trips like ice skating, to see a panto and other activities.

“Harpurhey is the second most deprived ward in the UK, and 90% of our members live within the first and second indices of poverty,” they said.

“For many of the children and families that we work with, Christmas can be a really difficult time, and no child deserves to spend Christmas anxious and going without, nor does any parent deserve to see their child upset that Santa hasn’t come for them.

“With the extra financial burdens, and rising heating bills, the Winter can be an incredibly hard time for many.”
