A celebrated New York bar which ushered in the secret ‘speakeasy’ trend is heading to Manchester for one night only.
Acclaimed bartender Jeff Bell’s PDT – which stands for Please Don’t Tell – has become one of the world’s most famous cocktail bars, with its own best-selling recipe book and a slew of international awards.
It’ll be arriving in town to host a takeover at Schofield’s Bar on Sunday 3 March, to help celebrate owner’s the Schofield brothers’ third anniversary of their own award-winning spot.
It comes just a week after the cocktail spot, just off Deansgate, was named the best bar in the country at the UK Top 50 Cocktail Bars list.
Co-founder Joe Schofield told Manchester’s Finest after scooping the coveted award: “We are honoured to receive recognition for being the best cocktail bar in the UK from Top 50 Bars.
“Through two different awarding bodies, this is the third year in a row we have won the title of best bar bar in the UK.”
He added: “We are very grateful for the team’s hard work and the wonderful guests that support our family business.”
PDT first opened in 2007, tucked away in the back of a hotdog shop in Manhattan’s East Village as a way of bending the licensing rules.
Customers enter through what looks to be an old fashioned phone booth, but which has a concealed door at the back.
Hotdogs remained part of the bar’s DNA, with renowned chefs, including David Chang, Daniel Humm and Wylie Dufresne pitching in their takes on the classic New York snack.
The bar was the first ever recipient of the James Beard Award for Outstanding Bar Program, while managing partner Jeff Bell was named American Bartender of the Year in 2017.
Manchester cocktail hounds will be treated to a host of the bar’s classic drinks, including the Benton’s Old Fashioned, and a few hotdogs too.
