A raffle to help raise money for victims of the flood disaster in Brazil has been set up by small businesses across Manchester.
Owners of popular Ancoats bakery The Flat Baker Matheus and Deborah, who are both from Brazil, have led the charge for donations to help the communities affected in their home country.
Towns in the Brazilian southern state of Rio Grande do Sul have experienced unprecedented devastation caused by flooding and overflowing rivers. In the days since the tragedy, it has been reported that more than half a million people have been displaced from their homes, and over 145 people have died.
In a post on Instagram, Deborah explained that they hope the raffle will make enough money to fill a truck with essential items for those who have lost everything – including drinking water, food, clothes and medication. It will then drive from Sao Paulo to Porto Alegre to deliver the goods.
Raffle prizes include £10 vouchers for The Flat Baker, a £50 voucher for Calcio in the Northern Quarter and £20 to spend at Amato. There’s also personal training sessions, gym passes and even photography shoots to win.
Every penny of the donations will be converted into much-needed aid for those affected to help rebuild their lives.
