Some of the best restaurants in Manchester are joining together for a week-long charity food festival this autumn.

Co-ordinated by non-profit organisation Eat Well MCR, the likes of Ramona, Where The Light Gets In, 10 Tib Lane, Maray and Great North Pie Co are among those who will be taking part in the Eat Well, Do Good festival.

It happens at venues across Manchester from 21 to 27 October, with the likes of chef Caroline Martins and the Chorlton Cheesemonger also getting involved.

Co-founder Mary-Ellen McTague said: “We’re hoping to get as many Greater Manchester venues as possible involved in our Eat Well Do Good fundraising week! It can be something as simple as adding a voluntary donation to customers’ bills, creating a special drink or dish that includes a donation to Eat Well, hosting a special fundraising event or even sponsored hikes.

“We’re open to whatever creative fundraising ideas people want to share too – the Where The Light Gets In front-of-house and kitchen team are swapping roles for an evening for example, with proceeds from the dinner coming to Eat Well.”

The festival will culminate with a party at Ramona on 27 October, where hospitality folk, restaurant owners, food fans and members of the public will be invited down to a soundtrack from Stells Selections, with all proceeds going to Eat Well.

Will Taplin, executive chef for Ramona, Firehouse and Diecast, said: “We’re really excited to be part of this fundraising campaign. We’ll have extra special slices at Ramona and a full pie at Diecast on sale throughout October, with a built-in donation from every pizza sold going to Eat Well MCR.”

Eat Well was founded at the beginning of lockdown by McTague, Kathleen O’Connor and Gemma Saunders, as a way of channelling food that was about to be thrown away by chefs and restaurant owners as the pandemic shuttered business across the region.

Recruiting restaurants and chefs – from Hawksmoor to Tampopo to Honest Crust – to make the surplus food into meals for those who needed them, they’ve since delivered well over 100,000 meals to people facing food insecurity in Greater Manchester.

It currently delivers over 2,500 meals per month to hostels and refuges, parents of children staying in hospitals, food banks, and schools supporting young people.
