Simon Rimmer has confirmed that Greens in Sale is to close with ‘immediate effect’.

In a message posted on the restaurant’s Instagram page, they said that the decision had come with ‘deep regret’, but that the future of the business had become ‘untenable’.

The news comes just eight months after he closed the original Greens restaurant in West Didsbury, the pioneering vegetarian restaurant he’d run for 33 years.

In a statement posted to the Greens Instagram page, Rimmer and co-owner Simon Connolly said: “It is with deep regret that the board of directors and shareholders have decided to close the doors permanently of Greens Sale with immediate effect.

“We’ve done everything possible to make this work, but it is now clear the business is untenable.

“We’d like to thank everyone, team members and guests, who have been on the Greens journey with us.”

The Sale branch of Greens opened on the reinvigorated Stanley Square development in 2022, Rimmer and Connolly’s second site, featuring an expanded restaurant, pavement seating at the front and a roof terrace.

But in January this year, he announced that the original Greens, on Lapwing Lane, was to close its doors.

“This is a very sad day,” he said in a message in Twitter. “After 33 years of running Greens in Didsbury, we’ve unfortunately had to close the door. Our landlords have increased our rent by on the region of 35%.

“The cost of raw materials the cost of heat, light and power, employing people and general food costs has meant that the business unfortunately has become unviable so with immediate effect we’ve unfortunately shut the door.

“It’s a heartbreaking day. I’d like to thank every single member of staff that has worked for us over the years, every single customer that’s come through the door, our amazing suppliers, our neighbours, our friends. Big love.”

In the weeks after closing, he told Manchester’s Finest that he felt like he was ‘in mourning’.
