The restaurant group behind hit London restaurants Gloria and Carlotta is understood to be seeking a site Manchester.
France-based Big Mamma is currently on the lookout for sites in the city, with one possibility being Gary Neville’s under-construction St Michael’s development, off Deansgate, though no definite spot has been signed up just yet.
Its over-the-top restaurants in London – Gloria, Carlotta, Jacuzzi, Ave Mario and Circolo Popolare – are known for their maximalist, retro decor, harking back to vintage Italian restaurants as well as US-style red sauce joints.
The restaurant menus feature a regularly changing range of Italian classics, including fettucine alfredo al tartufo and spaghetti with meatballs, as well as an epic lemon meringue pie. The restaurants are also famed for turning out a ’10 level lasagne’, as well as a carbonara, theatrically mixed inside a 4kg wheel of pecorino.
Big Mamma also restaurants across France, in Paris, Marseille, Lille, Lyon and Bordeaux, as well as sites in Monaco, Madrid, Milan, Munich, Hamburg and Berlin.
This would be their first site in the UK outside of London, and follows a host of other operators in the capital shifting their sights to Manchester.
Soon to arrive in the city will be Caravan, Flat Iron, Soho House and Blacklock, joining other recent arrivals like Gordon Ramsay’s Lucky Cat.
