Celebrated Stockport restaurant Where The Light Gets in is coming to Manchester for a series of pop-up events, kicking off next month.

The project will be called Where The Light Gets In: A Play in the City, and will see chef Sam Buckley’s crew – and a host of collaborators – arrive in Manchester to embrace cooking, film screenings, foraging, talks, banquets, pickling, butchery and all manner of other food-based creativity.

The first ‘act’ – called ‘A Man Eating A Leg Of Chicken’ – will see the restaurant setting up shop at Altogether Otherwise, the community-focussed events space on Shudehill, for a whole month from 21 November, hosting all kinds of happenings from natural wine events and roasting ‘whole animals over wood’ to record label and record shop pop-ups.

Act Two, called ‘The Land of Cockaigne’, will see them decamping to The Bungalow at Kampus for another month-long residency in January, where they’ll be establishing a ‘conceptual fast food diner, featuring ‘wood-fired burgers, ice cream floats, spritzy grape juice, self-service counters, name tags and sauce udders’.

Act Three – ‘ Une semaine de bonté (A WEEK OF KINDNESS)’ – in February, will see more events at the Bungalow, including panel discussions, pickling workshops, film screenings, urban foraging and butchery demonstrations from Littlewoods, as well as a more traditional restaurant set-up, where people will be encouraged to book a table with a stranger.

Act Four, the final series in March, will encompass long table banqueting dinners, alongside events like gardening workshops and ‘fruit mapping’, where locations of freely growing fruit around the city will be revealed.

Where The Light Gets In founder Sam Buckley said: “It is sad to leave Stockport, if only for five months. We felt that a move to Manchester had to be experimental and fun.

“We look forward to a season of play and discovery in the city. This feels like a chance to stretch our imaginations and our repertoire, to delve deep int`o the ever-curious world of food and all of its wonderful and ugly parts.”

Adam Brady, Executive Director of Kampus’ joint developers HBD., added: “The Bungalow has always been our village hall, and played host to a number of exciting pop-ups and residencies – and we are excited to welcome Where The Light Gets In on their latest venture here.

“This programme is a perfect way to showcase innovative food, whilst provoking conversations on community, the environment and culture – all of which aligns with our ambitions for this space. We’re proud to welcome this project and look forward to seeing it come to life.”

Where The Light Gets In first opened in a Victorian coffee warehouse in Stockport in 2016, and has become one of the most celebrated in the region – winning a Green Michelin Star for its sustainability in 2021.
