Gig season is well and truly upon us, and, over the weekend, we put together a list of our top picks for the month. You’ll also find that music, as well as food, leads the way in this week’s things to do – with gigs from Hidden Spheres, Cooper T and Giles Peterson all making the list.
There are also two very exciting new openings; plant-based sushi from CB Sushi in Ancoats’ General Stores and the opening of ThatZiki’s first ever sit-in restaurant in the heart of Chorlton. We’ve already had the pleasure of trying both, and it’s fair to say you won’t be disappointed.
It’s also National Curry Week this week, so you MUST get yourself down to some of the city’s very best Indian restaurants. A rice and three at This and That is always an excellent choice, and Zouk is doing BOTTOMLESS curry from today until Thursday – the perfect opportunity to fill your boots with some delicious authentic cuisine.
CB Sushi Opens in Ancoats General Stores
Monday 3rd October
Established in Liverpool back in 2018, CB Sushi is an entirely plant-based experience set up by founder and head chef, Chloe. The restaurant’s main aim is to prove that plant-based eating is just as good, if not better than traditional foods, as well as playing a pivotal role in benefiting our environment. The menu includes platters of sushi featuring vegan duck, sweet chilli ‘chicken’, katsu sandwiches and plenty more plant-powered delights.
Bottomless Curry at Zouk for National Curry Week
Monday 3rd – Friday 7th October
To celebrate National Curry Week, popular Indian restaurant, Zouk is offering diners an exclusive bottomless menu this week that gets you bottomless curry alongside freshly baked naan bread, rice and an alcoholic drink for a mere 20 pounds! Each day will see a different signature dish available to dine. With eight curries available across the four days that combine both meat and vegetarian dishes, no one will miss out on the bottomless curry offering.
Vodka Shot & Pierogi Festival
Wednesday 5th – Thursday 6th October
Platzki is once again hosting its Vodka Shot & Pierogi festival this week – which will see guests sample a range of dumplings alongside unique tipples. On Wednesday 5th and Thursday 6th October, diners can head to the restaurant to try the traditional homemade Polish dish, as well as a midweek tipple with Platzki’s exciting range of flavoured vodka, including; salted caramel, strawberry, golden black cherry, hazelnut and a delicious cherry-chocolate flavour.
Overdrawn at Stretford Food Hall
Wednesday 5th October
The popular pop-up, interactive art event is BACK at Stretford Food Hall this week. Overdrawn will feature live art, tables to draw on, pound portraits and street food stalls, with all materials provided on the evening, too. It takes place from 7pm – 9pm and aims to showcase local artists, celebrate creativity all while allowing the audience to get involved.
Isy Suttie at The Frog and Bucket
Wednesday 5th October
Most well-known for being the awkward girlfriend of Mark Corrigan in Channel 4’s dysfunctional flatmate comedy, Peep Show, Isy Suttie is a leading British comedian performing in Manchester this week. As part of the Women in Comedy Festival 2022, she will host a stand-up show at The Frog and Bucket featuring joyful jokes that lean toward the whirlwind of motherhood.
LF System Single Launch at Common
Wednesday 5th October
In demand dance duo LF SYSTEM celebrate the launch of their upcoming single Hungry (For Love) with a run of Hungry Pop Up sets at UK restaurants in Edinburgh, Manchester and London ahead of the release this week. They’ll takeover Common on Wednesday to celebrate the single, with a DJ set and slices of Nell’s pizza all evening long!
Thursday + Friends Launch at Escape to Freight Island
Thursday 6th October
Hosting the launch of brand-new weekday event, Thursday + Friends at Escape to Freight Island, Giles Peterson will take to the decks alongside Manchester legend Luke Una. The venue will then follow the evening with a further programme of world-renowned and respected DJs, soundtracking every Thursday night for the rest of October.
Roundabout Theatre in Irlam
Thursday 6th – Sunday 9th October
Created by theatre company Paines Plough, Roundabout is the UK’s first ever fully accessible, demountable, and portable plug-and-play theatre located in Prince’s Park. In its seventh visit to Salford, the space-ship-like theatre space will present comedy, music, free family and community events, and FOUR brand new plays that explore themes of the imagination, immigration and friendship.
ThatZiki Opens in Chorlton
Thursday 6th October
Viral Greek street food truck, ThatZiki will open the doors to its brand-new Chorlton site next week. Known for jam-packed gyros, loaded fries and a truly passionate team, this will be the first time you can enjoy Thatziki’s food in a traditional sit down, dining in environment, complete with a great range of alcoholic drinks and refreshing beverages.
Stupid Cupid Exhibition at Antwerp Mansion
Thursday 6th October
Hosted in the iconic walls of Antwerp Mansion, West Art Collective is collaborating with Luv3nite to showcase a selection of queer art and performances. There’ll be DJs providing a selection of loved up tunes, alongside stalls from local sellers spanning upcycled garments, art prints, badges and more.
Cooper T at Night & Day Cafe
Friday 7th October
The brainchild of Manchester producers, Kong and TMNMS, Cooper T is a hybrid of a variety of music genres that has Inspired the duo over the years, ranging from; punk, hip hop, indie, soul and jungle. Between them, to date, the duo have produced tracks for artists that include; Chunky, Black Josh, EVABEE, KEYAH/BLU, Skittles and Blind Mic.
Hidden Spheres at NAM
Saturday 8th October
Manchester music producer, DJ and NTS resident, Hidden Spheres will be live and direct from NAM. As a DJ Hidden Spheres draws from all his musical knowledge, always aspiring for togetherness and inclusiveness on the dance floor. Expect five hours of Deep House, Balearic Beat, Downtempo and Electro.
(Im)Perfect Yaks Sale at The People’s History Museum
Saturday 8th – Sunday 9th October
Taking place this Saturday and Sunday, cult brand Lucy & Yak are hosting an imperfect sale at The People’s History Museum, which will feature items of clothing that aren’t 100% perfect, but still 100% authentically fabulous Yak!
Melanin Markets – The King Edition at HOME
Sunday 9th October
Melanin Markets Manchester is a travelling events company that celebrates and promotes Black-owned businesses vibrantly in spaces across the city. After 2 jam packed, successful events at Contact Theatre and the Royal Exchange Theatre, the company’s founders Bianca Danielle and Kelly Morgan are excited to bring it to HOME, but this time with a twist, as the ‘King Edition’, first the first time ever, spotlights men in business.
From 12pm – 5pm, there’ll be a variety of East African, Caribbean and fusion food and drink businesses, as well as live art and hair services and African clothing and adult and children accessories on offer. Melanin Markets is free to attend, and you can check out some of the traders below
