Work is set to begin soon on a 22-storey development in the Northern Quarter, comprising of 122 one-bedroom flats, 13 two-bedroom flats and 26 with three bedrooms, along with commercial space on the ground floor.
The development itself is planned for 20-36 High Street opposite the Arndale Centre, currently home to a ghastly 1960s corner block and once home to Ruby Lounge. Demolition of the building is set to begin soon, along with the removal of the five market stalls on Church Street.
Set to completely transform a rather ugly end of the city centre, the new development is reminiscent of a building in 1930s New York or Chicago and would be a stunning new addition to the city’s architectural heritage.
It’s also worth noting that the development will most likely be worked on at the same time as the upcoming renovation and expansion of the derelict Debenhams building. which will gain a new 4-storey extension to the roof, including a brand-new Winter Garden on the 6th floor.
So keep an eye out for the cranes and bulldozers over the next couple of weeks – and rejoice that this long-awaited project is finally moving ahead, and we can rid the city centre of a serious 60s eyesore.
