Few districts reflect the monumental change that has overhauled Manchester this century more than Spinningfields. Today, it’s the CBD, the corporate HQ, and a place where deals are done and contracts signed. We can barely remember before. Regardless, it’s also awash with splendid high-end eateries, and one stands out in particular thanks to its lofty position on the 19th floor of landmark mid-rise No.1 Spinningfields. A tale of three offerings, all rolled into one, 20 Stories is a glamorous restaurant, a lively bar, and an iconic rooftop terrace offering 360-degree views across the place we love to call home.

Focusing on drinks first — aperitif, anyone? — and this is home to one of the North’s finest cocktail lists. Charmingly, the menu takes a lead from the myriad cultures that make up Manchester, creations and names giving a nice nod to those who know. All glasses are poured to perfection, and it’s worth noting we’ve rarely seen such an extensive range of non-alcoholic drinks before, making 20 Stories a great place to come for sophisticated refreshments without the morning after. Then again, with 600 wines in the cellar, and a focus on natural, biodynamic and organic processes, it would take a saint to resist.

Onto the food, and the A La Carte choices at 20 Stories are impressive. Argentinian red prawns with mango & chilli samba and lime mayo. Asparagus, Jersey Royals, whipped vegan feta, Spring leaves, and radish. Seared wood pigeon, lentil, rhubarb & chicory salad. And that’s just a sample of the starters. Beyond those, for mains think confit duck leg with harissa chick peas, chorizo, spinach and Madeira jus; pan roasted cod with fennel, cauliflower, apple, golden raisin and tarragon, and grilled artichoke, King Oyster, sautéed puntarella and parsley cream. Lobster to share and charcoal briquette cooked steaks are also available at 20 Stories, with an entire menu of desserts and a separate selection of dishes, including a classic roast, on Sundays. Five-course tasting menus — carnivore and vegan — would be the cherry on top, but we’ve still not got to the amazing afternoon tea, boozy bottomless brunches, pre-theatre, set dinner and lunch options.
