Welcome, chicken freaks. “Not your bog standard bird”, the team behind Bird of Prey have taken a British street food institution and made it even cluckin’ better with this ultra-modern fast food concept situated beneath the towers of Circle Square. Inside you’ll find 40 seats and a giant neon fowl at the window, and a further 20 guests can be accommodated at covered tables outside. Wherever you sit, though, it’s likely fried chicken is on the cards, although there are other delectable options on the menu, too.

First up, the process. All poultry served has been marinating in a secret blend of spices and seasoning for a minimum of 10 hours. This allows plenty of time for flavours to be absorbed ahead of the actual frying process. On that front, pick from the signature BoP fried chicken sandwich, strips and wings if you’re after lighter bites. For the main event, there’s a huge range of burgers to pick from all made with speciality buttermilk breast or thigh, including buffalo soldier (buffalo sauce, blue cheese sauce, crispy onions, garlic mayo, spring onion, American cheese, pickles and lettuce), and the smokestack, which is topped with turkey bacon, American cheese, smoky BBQ sauce and gravy).

Aside from the nine chicken burgers there’s also the option of smashed beef patties between buns, while vegans and vegetarians get to choose from the Flightless Birds section. A solid range of sides, including buffalo cauliflower bits, messy chick (think loaded fries with chicken strips), and mac & cheese, adds to the choice. Food aside, if there’s any room left the shakes are excellent, top picks being the vicky sponge of raspberry compote and crushed digestives, and BoP de Leche — salted caramel sauce, topped with fudge pieces. Alternatively, punt for classic sodas such as Vimto, v pink lemonade, and Sunkist orange.
