Department is a mid century furniture and lifestyle store situated at the top of Chorlton’s Beech Road stretch, next to the bus station and across from a parade of great bars and eateries on Barlow Moor Road. The shop is all about high quality timeless furniture you simply have to own.
Opening its doors in 2022, Department quickly established itself as a go-to for design-minded locals
before word spread across the region, drawing customers thanks to the unique stock and passion of owner Heather and Manager Lianne. Both have past experience in interiors and homeware retail, and have dedicated their careers to the study and discovery of furniture design and art. A story that rings true from the moment you step inside and start to look at the pieces they consistently source.
Expect to find iconic brands of the 1960’s including Charles & Ray Eames, Robin Day, Guy Rogers, Le
Corbusier, alongside Danish design names such as Hans Olsen, Ib Kofod Larsen and Finn Juhl, and leading contemporary designers. The stunning aesthetics go beyond sideboards, dining and coffee tables, chairs, and sofas, with hand-picked prints and lithographs from stylistically wide ranging artists like David Hockney, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Keith Haring, and Yayoi Kusama. An extraordinarily unique shopping experience, curated by highly experienced and educated experts. To call Department a South Manchester gem would be grossly understating things.
“Shopping vintage not only makes sense from a recycling point of view, it is often better value, better quality and built to last. Our aim is to inspire people to mix old and new to create a look that is more stylish and sustainable. It also makes for a more interesting shopping experience.” If that’s not enough to get you through Department’s front door, then what’s on display through the windows should be.
