Few locations feel more centrally placed within the Northern Quarter than Fig + Sparrow, which sits right at the heart of Oldham Street. Established in 2013, a boom time for the area, since day one this intimate coffee and gift shop with a rustic, au natural interior design has been one of the best destinations in the north of England for ground beans. Independently spirited, customers can indulge in a house blend made exclusively by Grindsmith, and rotation of single origin coffees served through AeroPress, Chemex, and V60 filters for those who prefer to take it slow, while a cold brew offers the ultimate in refreshment.
If coffee just won’t cut it, there’s also a wide selection of teas on offer as there always should be, including a variety of green leaves like Jade Monkey and Sensha. On top of getting customers caffeinated, Fig + Sparrow is also known for its breakfasts and brunches, from classics with a twist like a Bacon Muffin with a bloody Mary ketchup, to dishes much more unique to this establishment, for example what could be the only Truffle Feta Toast in Manchester, and Turkish Eggs with a whipped yogurt and chilli butter, satisfying those that want something more adventurous on their plate. There’s a range of weekly changing specials such as Breakfast Hash and French Toast using seasonal produce, plus they use local suppliers that include Grandad’s Sausages and Companio Bakery.
Meanwhile, a licensed bar with small but well selected choice of beers (Mythos and Cloudwater) and range of wines is also available. And when you’re done at the charming, cottage style stables, there are plenty of home products to peruse, not least kitsch gifts, gorgeous homeware, and a great range of unique greetings cards, candles, oil diffusers and chocolates.
