Levenshulme has an abundance of places to grab great food and drink these days, emerging as one of South Manchester’s hot spots for all things hospitality. And it’s not just the main Stockport Road strip that’s grabbing attention. Take Long Boi’s Bakehouse, for example, tucked away on the resolutely residential Forest Range, this is the definition of what a neighbourhood business looks like — genuine, authentic, and high quality. Run by an all-female team, the ovens first came on in Autumn 2020, and thanks to the incredible scents and flavours coming from the kitchen, a loyal following soon developed and stayed.
In a city of bakeries, Long Boi’s Bakehouse sets itself apart in a number of ways. Firstly, no two days are the same for staff and customers alike, with a menu changing to reflect the seasons, and specials on daily rotation depending on what’s available, and what staff feel inclined to make. All ingredients are sourced from celebrated suppliers, with fresh produce, milk and eggs coming by way of Organic North, while every gram of flour used is Wildfarmed, and many sweet treats arrive through Bare Bones Chocolate up in Glasgow.
As such, the counter is overflowing with incredible items, particular highlights including Vegan Blueberry & Dark Chocolate Babkas, Spuds — savoury brioche filled with bechamel, red onion chutney, and smoked cheddar — and some of the best croissants you’ll find this side of the Seine. Those who want to share the joy of Long Boi’s can head for their website, where they’ll also find an online gift shop with vouchers available. The operation is technically take-out only, although a handful of chairs on the pavement outside allow some to take more time over their experience, providing the weather holds out.
