It couldn’t have been anywhere else. Schofield’s Bar – which may or may not be the UK’s finest cocktail bar, depending on who you ask or which awards you listen to — is found at the ground floor of Sunlight House. A masterpiece of art deco design by the famous architect Joseph Sunlight, when it was completed in 1932 it was the tallest building in the city, reflecting a lavish pre-war aesthetic and the confidence of a global economic powerhouses. An era of incredible style, it was also a time when long drinks, highballs, Martinis and more were getting established.

The first rule about Schofield’s Bar, then is to expect old world elegance, excellent service and attention to detail. Booking is vital, as this none of this is a secret, although couples and smaller groups may find room here at certain times of the day. Whenever you arrive, you’ll be greeted at the door and then shown inside the dimly lit, dark-wood panelled, heavy curtained bar. Seating is available on high stools at the window and in front of the service area, with a small number of tables and chairs occupying the remainder of the space. With a soundtrack that tends towards jazz, blues and big band, and staff donning crisp white shirts and black tie, even before you taste the first drink you know just how good this place is going to be.

Run by Joseph and Daniel Schofield, who claimed three decades of hospitality experience before opening this joint, much of the menu is unique, although there are plenty of classics if you prefer to keep things traditional. Examples of the in-house creations include the Scotch-heavy William Wallace, Wyborowa Vodka-based Rock Pool, and the Cardinale — Booth’s Gin, Campari, and Schofield’s own bottled Dry Vermouth, which is worth trying on its own. Temperance alternatives (non-alcoholic) are also available, and there’s a limited but well-curated selection of snacks and small plates here, too. Like cheese boards with condiments and the amazing British charcuterie selection. The Valdespino Amontillado ‘Tio Diego’ sherry, recommended as an accompaniment, is a must.
