They really don’t make them like this anymore. The Cotton House is a family-friendly restaurant located in the heart of a stunning corner of Rossendale. As for the building, originally known as The Bridge End Hotel and Pub thanks to its location, at a crossing of the River Ogden, food has been served here since the middle of the 1800s and dishes continue to be plated up to this day, having reopened in its current guise in 2016 with brothers Zak and Marcus Yates now in control. A stunning heritage destination matched contrasted by chic interiors of rustic wood furnishings and minimalistic rural-modernism.

Situated around 40 minutes drive from Manchester itself, the location is also part of the appeal. The Cotton House stands in the middle of a number of exceptionally beautiful walking routes, and is the ideal stop off along the way or finishing point for those exploring nature spots such as Snig Hole and Holocombe Hill. Once here, you can expect a traditional English menu served to contemporary standards. Opening on small plates, these include honey & mustard chipolata sausages and chorizo, salt & chilli halloumi bites, crispy cauliflower fritters, freshly baked breads and seasonal soups.

Larger portions of pan-fried sea bass, roast squash risotto, mint-glazed lamb, braised beef cheek & chuck suet pudding, and beer battered haddock fillet were mains highlights at the time of writing. Although game pie — triple cooked with mushy peas and ale gravy — was the real standout. It’s important to note, though, options will vary depending on the time of year you’re here. And most of what comes from the kitchen didn’t travel far to get there, with local suppliers celebrated throughout the menu, which also features weekly specials. Known for its bustling atmosphere, not just the stunning surrounds and exceptional food, you’ll also find a great selection of wines, beers, spirits and soft drinks, and an upstairs function room for hire.
