We have spent many an afternoon happily watching the world go by at 199 Upper Chorlton Road. A short stroll through some charming leafy suburban streets from either the centre of Chorlton or Firswood, both of which are well served by the Metrolink tram network, The Hillary Step is one of a handful of Whalley Range drinking institutions that are worth tracking down if you’re out exploring the best of South Manchester.
Occupying a position on the side of a busy thoroughfare of bars, shops, bus stops and more, the great choice of drinks on offer and the unique name make this spot really stand out, ensuring few ever forget about this place. “A simple little boozer” The Hillary Step says on its website. “A haven for locals and those wanting to escape the city centre and get snug in a proper pub.” Situated in a classic red brick terrace in keeping with the neighbourhood’s style, this humble but beloved favourite offers covered outdoor seating a the roadside ‘beer garden’ and hard timber flooring, dark wooden tables and chairs, and a few nooks and crannies to hide out inside on those days when the weather does what North West weather loves to do.
Essentially, this is a watering hole for everyone no matter the month. In terms of drinks, expect things to be equally no-nonsense behind the bar. Quality imported lagers, hells, pilsners and more, excellent cask ales reflecting the very best of traditional British brewing culture, alongside more speciality tipples. This is also a great option for a gin and tonic, aged whiskey or other classic spirits — basically the kind of drinks you would expect (or hope) to find in a pub that feels like it has always been here and, god willing, always will be. Amen to that.
