Minerva Cuevas: Landings

Mexican artist Minerva Cuevas is known for linking social and scientific research to her art practice. Her work includes installation, video pieces and public interventions that often examine man’s relationship to nature. Taking second-hand materials and magazines including National Geographic as sources, Cuevas also generates conceptual collages, in which nature is portrayed as something that is bought and sold either as an ‘experience’ or as a ‘natural resource’ and taking us to areas science art spectrum where extinction processes are intimated.

Samantha Donnelly: Contour States

Contour States is the first major UK public solo show by British artist Samantha Donnelly. With a strong interest in the images presented in today’s media that continue to idealise and objectify the human form, the exhibition features new work that explores representations of female identity in photography, TV, film and advertisements. The exhibition creates an illusion of erotically charged nudity, but fundamentally only offers a fiction to buy into and invest in. Rather than just presenting a finalised work, Donnelly actively encourages visitors to engage with the process through which meanings are made and unmade.

Lewis Williams: Strangers III

Lewis Williams’ latest photographic series depicts individuals recruited from online adverts. The subjects received minimal instruction before being photographed at arbitrary city centre locations chosen by the photographer. The pictures, the result of a process rather than pre-conceived ideas, record the subjects’ projected identities, which appear to permeate the wider settings they are depicted in. Williams is a Manchester based photographer and graduate of MA Photography in Brighton. Join us on Fri 3 Feb from 18:00 in the bar for an informal launch of the exhibition, where there will be an opportunity to meet the artist. Richard Meaghan
Wed 7 March – Tue 17 April (free, Café & Bar)
Richard Meaghan will showcase a series of recent paintings, alongside a body of brand new work. His strident canvases show an interest in globalisation, where we as individuals each play some small part in a vast sexual, religious, economic, technological, cultural and political game – the unwitting germs of a much larger disease. But they are also about a ‘new age of consciousness’, free thinking and not accepting or conforming to society’s conditions. Meaghan lives and works in Liverpool and in 2009 was short-listed for the prestigious Liverpool Art Prize. Join us on Fri 9 March from 18:00 in the ground floor bar for an informal launch of the exhibition, where there will be an opportunity to meet the artist.
