Blank Media Collective’s ambitious summer programme launches at BLANKSPACE on the 11th July. Bringing together a wide range of emerging artists, speakers & performers from all over the world, many showcasing Manchester for the first time, equals: exploring feminism through art & conversation, is well worth side-stepping the MIF for to explore the art & join in the conversation.
What is equals?
A curatorial project by Anne Louise Kershaw & Nathalie Boobis equals is an exploration of the structures and systems that thread through our culture and language with regards to gender and feminism. Through the joint prisms of art and conversation equals aims to provide a variety of platforms for all people of all genders to participate in the discussions and debates surrounding feminism and gender equality.
The equals programme launches on the 11th July and will run till the 28th. It includes an exhibition, ‘speed debate’, artists’ talk and live event.
The exhibition:
Through the work of nine emerging artists, including Sarah Maple, best known for her strikingly subversive self-portraits and Goldfinger star Margaret Nolan, now a collage artist, the exhibition is an attempt to consider afresh where and how feminism could shape society and Rosanne Robertson, selected by Doodlebug as an emerging live artist and provocateur for Dazed and Confused.

The exhibition launches on 11th July 2013 between 6-9pm at BLANKSPACE, 43 Hulme Street Manchester) and runs until 28th July 2013.

The speed debate and artists talk:
On Saturday 13th July 2013, Blank Media Collective will be hosting an equals ‘speed debate‘ at 2022NQ where participants can engage in conversation and debate directly with high profile voices in UK feminism. Participants are invited to explore the hot topics of the day concerning feminism & gender equality before moving onto the next table & the next topic. Say as little or as much as you want and feel free to challenge preconceptions
Speakers include Ally Fogg (Guardian) and Lucy-Anne Holmes (No More Page 3), Caroline Criado-Perez (Keep Women On Bank Notes campaigner and writer for the New Statesman), Kate Smurthwaite (Comedien & Activist) and Vicky Horne (Art and the female image).
Following the speed debate, the speakers will be in discussion with the artists from the equals exhibition, followed by an artist Q&A .
The event begins at 11am on 13th July 2013 at 2022NQ, 20 Dale Street, Manchester, M1 1EZ. A limited number of tickets are available and cost £5 (£3 concessions).

The live event:
On the evening of Saturday 13th July 2013, an amazing line-up of artists will utilise sound, image and language to re-explore gender identity through live performance, film and readings.
Featuring live performance and video work by: Cristine Brache, Sara Brannan, Rachael Finney, Marlene Haring, Jenny Keane, Rosanne Robertson and Debbie Sharp. Featuring For Books’ Sake book stall

Red Flag Radical Women Walk:
As part for the equals programme Red Flag Walks are kindly hosting a ‘Radical Women’ walking tour of Manchester, leaving from Co-operative Bank, Corporation Street at 11.30am on Sunday 14th July. This walk will look at the role of women in Manchester’s radical movements include Co-operative Women’s Guild, Socialist women, Mary and Lizzy Burns, women writers on the Manchester Guardian, Mrs Gaskell, the Manchester Society of Women Artists and women at Peterloo.
Meeting point: Co-operative Bank, Corporation Street.

Walk For Women:
Blank Media Collective have also teamed up with Walk For Women, a national campaign to commemorate the 50,000 women who walked to London 100 years ago, converging in Hyde Park, taking action to make a positive change. The equals book
To accompany and expand on the exhibition and events the equals publication will acts as an archive of the discussions, questions, ideas and art work that have been created as a result of the project. It serves to document the exhibition but also features works created specifically for the purpose, including texts from Angela Readman (shortlisted in 2012 for the first Costa Short Story Competition) among many others. The book will extend the debate beyond the geographical boundaries of the exhibition and events, to further inspire other people and other points of view, leaving a legacy that can contribute to the ongoing canon of feminist debate.
