Few figures in Greater Manchester have the clout of Broughton’s Finest, Dr John Cooper Clarke, general practitioner of fine rhymes since 1977, the year in which, like the punks of the time, he released his first EP of poetry.
He has continued to delight, captivate and enthral ever since, balancing his keen eye for urban decay with his clarion championing of the working class. His work has been taught, scrutinised, pored over and celebrated for nearly 50 years.
We caught up with the wiry old legend to discuss everything from inducing anxiety for insurance companies and working with the Honey Monster to his recent collaboration with another Manchester institution – the Co-op.
